The Band parked in the Harbour Master’s car park by kind permission and the weather was still bright and dry. Four more members were able to join in for the afternoon bringing the numbers up to 10 pipers, and 6 drummers. After lunch the members assembled in the Conservative Club for a tune-up and formed up outside ready to march to the parade square and Cenotaph by 14.20 hours. The large square was filled with contingents from the Services and Youth Organisations with members of the public crowding the streets. There was to be a short service in the square as the main one was held later in the Cathedral.
The Truro Band played “Oh Valiant Hearts” as the Dignitaries took their places in front of the Cenotaph. The Parade Marshal brought the Parade to attention for a General Salute before the Lord Lieutenant. The Last Post was sounded. Two minutes’ silence followed at 14.30 hours, and the Reveille was played. During the Wreath laying the Truro Band played “Abide with me”. Prayers followed and the Chaplain gave the Blessing. Parade Standards were raised and after the National Anthem the order was given for the whole Parade to stand to attention and the Kernow Band led the march off. They circled into Lemon Quay and entered the parade ground again to pass the Podium where the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall took the Salute with the Mayor and Dignitaries. The crowds clapped appreciatively as the Band passed followed by the Standard Bearers and the various services of the Parade on their way to the Cathedral Square to attend the Memorial Service and on arrival they continued to play as the long procession entered the Cathedral. On dismissal the members enjoyed some time socializing on the warm sunny afternoon before partaking of welcome refreshments kindly provided by the Royal British Legion in the Conservative Club.
Tunes played during the day – on the march: Green Hills/Battles O’er, Pack up your Troubles/It’s a long way to Tipperary/Keep the Home Fires Burning, Cockney Jocks/Rainbow Country/Bluebells of Scotland. Static tunes: Towerhill Dreams, Highland Cathedral.
