The venue for this event was very much rural, in wide open fields with a lovely far reaching panoramic view. With a weather forecast of thunder, lightning and heavy rain for most of the country, there was the hope that Cornwall might escape the storms at least for the event duration. The dress code was No 2s with short sleeves and the 8 pipers and 4 drummers assembled at the allotted time ready for a warm-up before the short march to the arena at 10.15 where they formed a half circle and played for 45 minutes.
Already the showground was filling up with families and visitors who were circulating the numerous stalls and food outlets. There was a stage set up where the Cornish Wurzels were to entertain and the lively jazz group Jumping Out. As well as the Kernow Pipes and Drums Band there was the Camborne Youth Band. Children’s entertainment was much in evidence in the form of the bouncy castle and swings and pony cart racing rides. There was the usual craft tent, and tents housing chickens, rabbits, ducks and goats and an ongoing demonstration of spinning goats’ wool. With an amazing array of tractors and agricultural vehicles to browse through and ongoing demonstrations in another arena of horse training on assault courses, there was more than enough for an entertaining morning.
The few clouds dispersed, the sun shone and the showground was rapidly filling up as the Band played their second performance at 11.45 to an appreciative audience. Tunes played during the two slots were as follows – Green Hills/Battles O’er, Scotland the Brave/Rowan Tree/Wings/Bonny Galloway, Scotland the Brave/Mairi’s Wedding, Colin’s Cattle/Shoals of Herring, Cockney Jocks/Rainbow Country/Bluebells of Scotland, Highland Cathedral and Last of the Great Whales. Also played were Trelawney and Camborne Hill.
It had been a pleasant morning in wonderful weather in a lovely country atmosphere and after dismissal some members stayed to enjoy the afternoon in the busy showground before moving on to take part in the Delabole Carnival later on at 7pm.
