It was a hot summer’s day on Thursday when the Band Members met in the car park of the Lands End Complex which was swarming with visitors bent on enjoying the numerous entertainments on offer.
There were seven pipers and three drummers and the Flag Bearer. The dress for the day was No 1s with feather bonnets and the band looked impressive as they marched on for their first slot at 14.00 hours. There were to be two more slots one at 15.30 and the last at 18.00 hours, each lasting approximately half an hour. Tunes played included the following – Green Hills/Battles O’er, Scotland the Brave/Rowan Tree/Wings/Bonny Galloway, Scotland the Brave/Mairi’s Wedding, Waters of Kylesku/Skye Boat/Morag of Dunvegan, Cockney Jocks/Rainbow Country/Bluebells, Amazing Grace, Highland Cathedral, Last of the Great Whales, Colin’s Cattle, Shoals of Herring and Dark Isle. Also played were Mist Covered Mountain and Abide with Me and other solos were also undertaken.
The audience were enthusiastic in their applause and requests for photo shoots were made in between the Members’ appearances, one of which was with the two young men who arrived after their Help for Heroes fund raising stint cycling from John O’ Groats.
The very young flag bearer was stalwart as ever as he patiently stood holding the tall Flagpole. After the 15.30 performance the band stopped for a pasty and drink kindly provided by the Organizers. At the finish of their last appearance the Band was dismissed and some members went home and others stopped to watch the Fireworks Display to be put on later. It had been a very enjoyable day, in picturesque surroundings and the Band had been at their very best playing to a lively and appreciative audience.
